Another post in my Bright Ideas series about the stuff on my more metaphorical plate this week.
- I was at a conference about the role played by reason and emotion in moral decision making this week. It was super interesting and really lit up my brain, and I was comforted to re-affirm that philosophers still, for the most part, don’t have the answers. But the questions, though!
- I met this very nice man, and got to talk to him a bit about solidarity and being a human and a philosopher at the same time. Here is a short video he made about some Ancient Chinese philosophers disagreeing about human nature. Are you a sprout or a craftsman? Can I be a craft-sprout?
- This stuff gets me thinking. Are we essentially good or bad, or rational or emotional? Most of us have some intuitive picture or narrative that makes sense to us: we are basic egoists, we are a mix of everything, we aren’t essentially anything, we are what we eat, etc. and so forth. We tell such incredibly complicated stories to explain ourselves and our place in the world. We should probably listen to more stories before we get so fixed on the way things are, right? Chimamanda Adichie knows.
- Also: what if you pick a completely different story for a while and try it on? This event looked really interesting (a group of adults singing A Spoonful of Sugar!!) and I wish I could take undergrad courses again.
- Also, because I do think about food constantly, this stuff:
- Date bars! Perfect potluck food. I’m tweaking the recipe and posting my own version soon.
- Delicious tofu and noodles! I am learning about sauces at the moment.
- The strawberry sugar here is so creative. Also: so pretty. I’m obsessed with this blog right now.
Happy Sunday, my dears! Have a great week.
