I’m trying to ease into fruit and away from more processed sugar, with mixed success. However, every time I make poached pears, I wish I made them more often. This week, they feel almost like the good parts of holiday pie or cake with their mulling spices and their lovely dense texture.
Poached Pears

Ingredients
- Pears of any sort.
- 1 liter of water, give or take
- Juice from ½ a lemon
- a pinch of cinnamon
- 4-5 cloves
- 1 T honey
Instructions
- Peel and quarter pears.
- In a large, heavy pot, combine water, lemon juice, honey, and spices.
- Add pears.
- Heat until just simmering, then reduce heat to medium low.
- Poach for at least 20 minutes, then turn off heat and let the pears cool in the pot.
- Refrigerate for up to 1 week
